New Sinkhole Opens In Orlando wrote that a new sinkhole which opened up over the weekend is causing major problems in Groveland, a small city within Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Crews arrived on scene Wednesday morning, just days after a much bigger sinkhole opened up causing a boil water advisory and forcing the evacuation of a home.

Wednesday’s situation is being described as the beginning stages of a sinkhole and crews are hoping to stabilize the scene to prevent further damage.

City Manager Redmond Jones said unless it becomes a public safety risk, there’s nothing the city can do.

“It is on private property, so we’re really on standby for assistance,” Jones said.

The city is recommending that a geologist come out and inspect the site. A few blocks away, a boil water notice is still in effect after a 70-foot sinkhole opened up this past weekend.

Some 500 households remain without drinkable water. Among them, World War II veteran Raymond Burtoft, who has lived there for 60 years. He remembers a sinkhole opening up in the same spot 45 years ago.
